
24 years ago after Leo S. Lutz retired from Caterpillar, he became mayor of Columbia Borough. He was considering moving because Columbia was dying. When a group of friends asked Lutz if he would run for mayor he told them he would do it as long as they stayed in it with him. His grandfather had served as Columbia’s mayor. The downtown district had more vacant buildings than ones that were occupied. His grandfather told him “The secret to Columbia’s future lies in its past. ”
